How are Customized Insoles made?

Customized insoles are specially designed to provide support and cushioning to the feet, based on an individual's specific needs. The process of making customized insoles typically involves a few key steps, including pressure scanning, foot vacuum moulding, heating, moulding, and grinding.

Foot Pressure Scan

The first step in making customized insoles is pressure scanning. This involves using a pressure sensor to map the pressure points on the individual's foot. The sensor captures information about the distribution of weight across the foot, which is used to determine the areas that need the most support and cushioning.

Vacuum Moulding

The next step is foot vacuum moulding, which involves creating a mould of the individual's foot using a vacuum and silicon bag.

The foot is placed on top of the silicon bag.

This makes the foot sink in the silicon bag and the bag now has a 3D replica of the foot on it.

The vacuum is tuned on, and the bag hardens, so that the foot replica stays as is for further steps.

Moulding the Insole

insole moulding

Once the mould of the individual's foot has been created, the insole material is heated and then moulded to the shape of the foot on the vacuum bag. This process is done in a controlled environment, ensuring that the insole conforms to the exact shape of the foot.

Grinding

After the insole has been moulded, it is then ground to ensure a smooth and accurate fit. This process involves removing any excess material and shaping the insole to ensure that it fits comfortably inside the individual's shoe.

Further Customizations

Based on the problem the patient is experiencing, the insoles need to be further modified. For corns and ulcers, offloading is required in the insole to decrease the pressure on corn or ulcer. Wedges might be added to insole to gain certain biomechanical corrections. Extra reinforcement needs to be provided to the arch for some cases.

Inspection and Trial

Finally, the customized insole is then inspected for any defects and is then ready for use.

The patient is then asked to walk after wearing the insoles. Adjustments are made to the insole if any discomfort is felt during walking.

It's important to note that the process of making customized insoles can vary depending on the materials used and the technology available.

In conclusion, making customized insoles involves several key steps including pressure scanning, foot vacuum moulding, heating, moulding, and grinding. These steps ensure that the insole is tailored to the specific needs of an individual's foot, providing support and cushioning where it is needed most. The making of the customized insole is a complex process and can vary greatly depending on the patient's pathology, and therefore requires certified medical practitioners to carry it out.
